2020 Flu Season Limited Visitor Policy at Burdett Birth Center

Flu season is here and that means it’s time to change our visitor policy at Burdett Birth Center.

When flu season is declared by the New York State Department of Health (DOH), Burdett Birth Center puts our flu season visitor policy into place. (Normally, we have no set visitation hours.) We keep this policy in place until the DOH declares the flu season to be over. We receive a lot of questions about visiting hours, in general, so we’d like to provide families with more information, especially during this time.

At Burdett, our visitor guidelines allow a maximum of two visitors in the patient room at a time. Any adults are allowed to visit along with siblings of the newborn. However, during the flu season, all other children under the age of 12 are not allowed. In addition, all visitors must use a waterless hand cleaner upon entering and exiting the patient’s room. Anyone who appears to have respiratory symptoms such as cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, fever, rash or diarrhea will not be allowed to visit patients.

For more information on flu activity in New York State (NYS), head over to the Department of Health website. They have handy, informative information such as a flu tracker, prevention tips, fact sheets, and a flu vaccine finder.

At Burdett Birth Center, we offer the flu shot to staff and recommend family members make appointments to be vaccinated before the birth of a new baby. Also, we recommend that parents contact their children’s childcare facilities to request all staff be immunized if they haven’t been already. For more information, please consult your provider and child’s pediatrician about the availability of 2019-2020 flu vaccinations. Take a look at some of our other blog posts for more information on flu prevention and cold prevention, especially during the winter months.
