Summer 2019 Activities & Events for Families in the Capital Region

The school year is almost over, and it’s getting consistently warmer outside (finally!). There are a lot of fun summer activities for families in the Capital Region. We’d like to share a few enjoyable, low-cost summer 2019 Capital Region family activities and events to help your family stay busy this June, July and August!

Junior League of Albany’s Touch-A-Truck
Saturday, June 1, 2019 | 10 am – 3 pm

The Junior League of Albany will be holding its fourth annual Touch-A-Truck event, a family fun day offering kids of all ages a hands-on experience with big trucks. There will be 30-40 different vehicles that children and adults can touch, sit in, honk horns, and get to know the people who drive them along with food, radio, entertainment, vendors, raffles and bounce houses. The cost is $8.00 kids individual ticket (kids ten and under), $2.00 adult individual ticket, and free for kids under two. They will also be offering horn free hours from 10am-12pm for children with special needs and sensitive ears.  Here is more information.

The 25th Schenectady Kids Arts Festival
Saturday, June 1, 2019 12 pm – 4 pm

This free event for all ages features 50 groups painting, sculpting, performing, dancing and inspiring kids. This year’s theme encourages all participating artists and groups to share a historic milestone of their own, and happenings will take place around Schenectady City Hall on Jay and Franklin Streets. 4th Annual Park and Play Movie Night
Friday, June 7, 2019 | Activities at 7:30 pm; Movie starts at 8:30 pm

Kick off the summer with a free event brought to you the Samaritan Hospital Healthy Future, Healthy Troy committee! There will be fun and games, free popcorn and refreshments, a meet-and-greet with SouthPaw and the Tri-City ValleyCats Street Team, and an outdoor screening of “Ferdinand” on the big screen. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and you are encouraged to arrive early and bring your own blanket or lawn chair. Here is more information.

Every Friday during the summer on First Friday, families can watch movies projected onto the wall of the adjacent Front Street Deli building on Front Street. The movies are free, and families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. The schedule is listed above.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany and the Troy Boys & Girls Club are merging, and to celebrate, they are hosting all day long events in both cities. In Troy, there will be a barbeque and a block party, and in Albany a basketball game, basketball clinical, dinner and community resource fair. All events are free. Here is more information.

Troy River Fest

Troy River Fest showcases historic downtown Troy. There are children’s programs such as the Kids Chalk Art Contest from 10 am – 1 pm, magic shows, face painting, all-day fun with the Troy Boys & Girls Club and story time with the Troy Public Library. Here is more information.

Tri-City ValleyCats

The Tri-City ValleyCats kick off their season at “The Joe” on Father’s Day (Sunday, June 16) at 6 pm against the Staten Island Yankees. This is a family-friendly event that has food, live entertainment, shopping, children’s activities, and of course, hot air balloons. The Kids Zone is open each day of the festival. Balloon rides take place at sunrise and sunset, which are the safest times. Daily admission costs are $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 3-15 and children under 2 are free. There are weekend passes available and free parking. Hot air balloon rides and helicopter rides do cost extra. Here is more information.

Bow Tie Cinemas Summer Kids Series 2019

Summer days can be hot! If you want to cool off in the air conditioning and watch a movie, you can – for free! Every Tuesday and Wednesday, starting on June 25, the Wilton and Schenectady Bow Tie Cinema locations will show children’s movies starting at 10 am. Tickets are first come, first served. Free Fishing Days
Saturday, June 29 – Sunday, June 30, 2019

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), during Free Fishing Days/Weekends, anyone can fish the fresh waters of New York State and no fishing license is required! All other freshwater fishing regulations still apply. Here is more information.

Proctors Theater Free Summer Movies

Every Sunday in July and August, families can head over to the GE Theater at Proctor’s for free movies. Showtimes are at 10:30 am and 1 pm. Here is more information.

Palace Theater Summer in the City Free Movie Series

Families can come out and enjoy the screening of eight movies during the summertime for free at the Palace Theater. Showings are every Wednesday during July and August.  The doors open at 12:00 PM for fun and activities. The movie begins at 1:00 PM. Here is more information.

“Parkfest” – Wilton’s Community Day

The town of Wilton celebrates its bicentennial this year. Admission is free, and there are free activities for all ages. There are amusement park rides, pony rides, and a rock-climbing wall for an extra charge. Fireworks go off at 9:30 pm. Here is more information.

Performing Arts at the Common (Family Series)

The Town of Clifton Park is sponsoring a 2018 Performing Arts at the Common at the outdoor Clifton Common Stage. On Wednesday evenings, the children’s series will feature a wide range of musicians and performers. Admission is free, and all performances begin at 7 pm. Here is more information.

Park Playhouse “Disney’s Newsies”

The Park Playhouse has been producing free, outdoor summer theater productions in Albany’s Washington Park for over 30 years. Throughout August, families can watch “Disney’s Newsies every Tuesday through Saturday evening at the Park Playhouse in Washington Park. Here is more information.

Of course, town pools and spray pads, local parks and state parks are perfect places to exercise and play. Just always remember to protect your baby from the sun. We also encourage you to visit your local public libraries to see what types of activities they offer for you and your child!
