Summer 2018 Activities & Events for Families in the Capital Region

The school year is winding down, and the temperatures are heating up. There are a lot of fun summer activities for families in the Capital Region. We’d like to share a few enjoyable, low-cost summer 2018 Capital Region family activities and events to help your family stay busy this summer!

Wild Tails of Albany Animals

Tri-City ValleyCats

Friday, June 15, 2018 (first home game) – Tuesday August 28,2018 (last home game)

The Tri-City ValleyCats kick off their season at “The Joe” on Friday, June 17th at 7 pm against the Vermont Lake Monsters. The ValleyCats are a Class-A, Short Season Affiliate of the World Series Champion Houston Astros. The Movies Under the Stars Series of outdoor movie screenings is back this summer in Albany. Admission is free. Bring your family, blankets and lawn chairs and sit back and enjoy the show. Be sure to arrive early to get a good space!

Children’s Star Sighting at Henry Hudson Planetarium

Families and children grades pre-K-2 can enjoy this interactive program that explores the stars, planets, comets and constellations in the night sky. The cost is $3.00 per person. This program is followed by another interactive program geared toward children ages 8 and older. Here is more information.

Troy River Fest

Monument Square & River Street, Downtown Troy, NY

Troy River Fest showcases historic downtown Troy. There are children’s programs such as Ragliacci Rags from 11 am – 2 pm, magic shows, face painting, all-day fun with the Troy Boys & Girls Club and story time with the Troy Public Library.

Saratoga Balloon & BBQ Festival

Friday, June 22, 2018 | 3 pm – 8 pm (marketplace open); 6 pm – 7 pm (balloon rides); 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm (balloon glow)

This is a family-friendly event that has food, live entertainment, shopping, children’s activities, and of course, hot air balloons. The Kids Zone is open each day of the festival. Balloon rides take place at sunrise and sunset, which are the safest times. Daily admission costs are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 3-15 and children under 2 are free. There are weekend passes available and free parking. Hot air balloon rides and helicopter rides do cost extra. Here is more information.

“Parkfest” – Wilton’s Community Day

Saturday, July 7, 2018 | Events all day; Fireworks at 9:15 pm

 The town of Wilton celebrates its bicentennial this year. Admission is free, and there are free activities for all ages. There are amusement park rides, pony rides, and a rock climbing wall for an extra charge. Fireworks go off at 9:15 pm. The schedule for this event is coming soon.

Schenectady County SummerNight 2018

Friday, July 14, 2018 | 5 pm – 10 pm

Downtown Schenectady (State Street between Broadway and Barrett Street and on the Jay Street Pedestrian Mall)

This event is a free, family-friendly block party featuring live music from the Spin Doctors and local bands. There will be children’s activities with the Schenectady YMCA, the Schenectady Boys & Girls Club, miSci, free face painting and more. Here is more information.

The Town of Clifton Park is sponsoring a 2018 Performing Arts at the Common at the outdoor Clifton Common Stage. On Wednesday evenings, the children’s series will feature a wide range of musicians and performers. Admission is free, and all performances begin at 7 pm. We’ve included the schedule above.

Waterford Tugboat Roundup

Each year, the Waterford hosts a three-day festival that celebrates tugboats and New York’s rich maritime history. The festival kicks off on Friday with a tugboat parade up the Hudson River and there are children’s activities and tugboat tours all weekend. Admission is free. Here is more information.

Of course, town pools and spray pads, local parks and state parks are perfect places to exercise and play. Just always remember to protect your baby from the sun. We also encourage you to visit your local public libraries to see what types of activities they offer for you and your child!
