After a long winter, it’s time for Capital Region residents to head back outside and enjoy (hopefully) warmer temperatures. We’d like to share a few fun, low-cost spring events and other ideas to help your family stay busy and enjoy the spring season.
miSci (Museum of Innovation and Science) – Butterflies & Bloom

The butterfly house at miSci is open from mid-February to mid-April, and you can check out butterflies from every stage of life and learn about different species, what they eat and how they’re used by scientists. Admission is free for members, $8 for children (3-12), $12 for adults (13+) and $10 for seniors (65+). Here is more information.

On the first Friday of each month, the New York State Museum has Story Art for toddlers and preschoolers in the Kids Cove. Kids listen to stories and create art projects. A different theme is announced each week on the day of the program. Here is more information.
Kid’s Day at Peebles Island

This will be the second year for this event, which gives families the chance to learn about the animals that live in the park with a short, guided walk, arts and crafts, compass making, geocaching and the chance to build your own birdhouse. The event is free to attend, but if you’d like to build a birdhouse, you must register in advance and pay $3 for a materials fee. Here is more information.
Saratoga Farmer’s Market Story Time

CANstruction Family Fun Day

This annual event is an exhibit and design competition where architects, contractors, engineers and students create structures out of canned food items. After the event, all cans will be donated to various food pantries in the Capital Region. Visitors can see the exhibits and vote for their favorites. Baby Animal Days at Indian Ladder Farms

Each year, Indian Ladder farms offers tours of its baby animal barn, goat playground, and outdoor farm exhibits. Children get to see, pet, and learn about chicks, turkey poults, ducklings, goslings, bunnies, lambs, goat kids, piglets and calves! Here is more information.
Kids Day at the Saratoga Automobile Museum

Hudson Children’s Book Festival

One of New York State’s largest children’s book festivals is held each year in Hudson, NY. If your family doesn’t mind the approximately 30-60-minute drive, kids and parents can enjoy this free event which brings in over 75 children’s book authors and illustrators, musical performers, and speakers. There are also “Read to Me” workshops for preschool – 4th grade students where their favorite authors read to them, do projects, and talk about the books. Here is more information.

Did you know that Albany is the oldest Dutch settlement in America? The city celebrates its Dutch heritage each year on Mother’s Day weekend in Washington Park.
