Fall 2019 Activities & Events for Families in the Capital Region

As we start off the month of September, kids head back to school. New moms may be a little nervous sending their little ones off to pre-school for the first time. The days are still warm, but the nights get a little crisper. Of course, fall doesn’t officially begin until September 22, but there are plenty of enjoyable, low-cost fall 2019 Capital Region family activities that take place from September through November that we’d like to share.

Stillwater Family Day Weekend
Friday, September 13, 2019 | 5 pm – 9:30 pm
Saturday, September 14, 2019 | 12 pm – 9:30 pm

The town of Stillwater is hosting a Family Day Weekend to also celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the American Legion. There are free rides, vendors, and children’s activities along with fireworks and live music. Here is more information.

Albany Book Festival
Saturday, September 14, 2019 | 10 am – 4 pm
University at Albany, Campus Center Assembly Hall, 1400 Washington Ave, Albany, NY 12222

The book festival, hosted by the NYS Writers Institute and UAlbany brings together bookstores, publishers, literary organizations and vendors along with 100 local authors who will be signing and selling copies of their books. There will be areas dedicated to both children and young adult literature. Admission is free. Here is more information.

Capital Region Apple & Wine Festival
Saturday, September 14 – Sunday, September 15, 2019
10 am – 6 pm (Saturday); 10 am – 5 pm (Sunday)
Altamont Fair, 129 Grand Street, Altamont, NY 12009

Plenty of good food and drink, a car show, and art & craft show, and plenty of children’s activities! Admission is $9 per person at the gate, and children under 15 are free. Parking is also free. Attendees are encouraged to donate to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York with either a non-perishable food item or a monetary donation. Here is more information.

Clifton Park Farm Fest
Saturday, September 14 – Sunday, September 15, 2019 | 10 am – 5 pm
Various farms in the Clifton Park, NY area

There are many working farms in the Clifton Park, NY area.  This is the day that you can drive to each of the farms for fall activities such as horseback riding, apple picking, hayrides and more. Here is more information (and keep checking back for more updates).

Back to School Expo – Celebrity STEM Event
Saturday, September 21, 2019 | 10 am – 3 pm
Empire State Plaza Convention Center, Madison Avenue, Albany, NY, 12207

Each year, the Back to School Expo takes place at Empire State Plaza with hands-on STEM activities, interactive exhibits, celebrity appearances and appearances from Marvel Superheroes. This year’s guest is Thomas Doherty from the Descendants Disney Movie Series. Tickets are general admission and can be purchased online or at the door. They are $10 for general admission online and $13 at the door, and there are a limited number of tickets for purchase at different price points for autographs. Here is more information.

The Prince & Princess in Me Series

This free program is for kids ages 5 to 12. It focuses on building self-esteem, self-love and self-respect Here is more information on where you can register.

New York State Free Fishing Day

Across New York State

On these days, anyone can fish freshwaters in New York State without a fishing license. This is a great family activity. Here is more information.

Halfmoon Harvest Festival

Activities at this free family event include a pumpkin decorating, hayrides, pony rides, rock climbing wall and a bounce house. Here is more information.

Story Art at the New York State Museum

This event for toddlers and preschoolers is free to attend. You just have to pick up tickets at the main lobby desk and head up to the Kids Cove at the museum. Here is more information.

Kids Day Off Bowling Specials

Did you know that Saratoga Strike Zone has ‘Kid’s Day Off’ specials? They have two dates posted for October 2019. For $14 per person, you get two hours of bowling, shoe rental, two slices of pizza, soda, bumper card rides and ballocity. Here is more information.

Spooky Science Family Day at miSci

miSci is a very kid-friendly museum with interactive exhibits surrounding science and technology. Their October family day is Halloween themed. Admission is free for members, $8 for children (3-12), $11.00 for adults (13+), and $10.00 for seniors (65+). Here is more information.

Troy ChowderFest

Monument Square & Downtown Troy, NY 12180

Come hungry (and come early)! Families can vote on the best chowder in the Capital Region for $1/sample. Admission to the event is free, and tickets to sample can be purchased at Troy’s Monument Square. Samples can be found there and at participating Downtown Troy restaurants. National Chemistry Day

On National Chemistry Day, head over to the NYS Museum, 4th floor terrace, for interactive chemistry demonstrations, fun hands-on activities and experiments.  Here is more information.

Saratoga Springs DBA Fall Festival

For the eighteenth year, downtown Saratoga Springs is transformed for fall-themed fun for children under 12. Local businesses and the Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association put together activities such as circus acts, trick or treating and the Pumpkin Roll. Costumes are encouraged.
