Fall 2018 Activities & Events for Families in the Capital Region

As we start off the month of September, kids head back to school. New moms may be a little nervous sending their little ones off to pre-school for the first time. The days are still warm, but the nights get a little crisper. Of course, fall doesn’t officially begin until September 22, but there are plenty of enjoyable, low-cost fall 2018 Capital Region family activities that take place from September through November that we’d like to share.

Outdoor Activities

Albany Pine Bush Preserve & Discovery Center

Open Monday – Friday | 9 am – 4 pm
Open Saturday, Sunday and holidays | 10 am – 4 pm

The Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center provides interactive exhibits and activities for children and families. Public programs are open to individuals, families and small groups. They are led by staff, volunteers and guest experts. Topics are related to plants, animals, nature and exploration. Admission is free, but you do need to sign up for programs in advance. Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center

Open year-round during daylight hours

Located in Grafton, NY, Dyken Pond provides environmental education, outdoor recreation and youth development programs. Here is more information on upcoming programs for Fall 2018 including fees, suggested donations and contact information on how you can register.

Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center
Open year-round 9 am – 5 pm (Closed Mondays)

The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center is located near Thompson’s Lake in Albany County. It offers educational programs year-round. Here is more information and a calendar of upcoming events.

STEAM-Powered Saturdays – Tech Valley Center of Gravity

Saturday, September 8, 2018 | 10 am – 1 pm

On the first Saturday of each month, the ThinQubator at the TechValley Center of Gravity offers a free STEAM project for children ages 4-12. September’s project is an Egg Drop Challenge. TVCOG updates their calendar with events on its website. Here is more information.

Back to School Expo – Celebrity STEM Event
Saturday, September 15, 2018 | 10 am – 3 pm
Empire State Plaza Convention Center, Madison Avenue, Albany, NY, 12207

Each year, the Back to School Expo takes place at Empire State Plaza with hands-on STEM activities, interactive exhibits and celebrity appearances. This year’s guests include Disney Channel’s Skai Jackson and Moriah Formica, local contestant from NBC’s The Voice. Tickets are general admission and can be purchased online. They are $7 for general admission and there are a limited number of $20 tickets for autographs. Here is more information.

Capital Region Apple & Wine Festival
Saturday, September 15 – Sunday, September 16, 2018
10 am – 6 pm (Saturday); 10 am – 5 pm (Sunday)
Altamont Fair, 129 Grand Street, Altamont, NY 12009

Plenty of good food and drink, a car show, and art & craft show, and plenty of children’s activities! Admission is $8 per person at the gate, and children under 15 are free. Parking is also free. Attendees are encouraged to donate to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York with either a non-perishable food item or a monetary donation. Here is more information.

Clifton Park Farm Fest
Saturday, September 15 – Sunday, September 16, 2018 | 10 am – 5 pm
Various farms in the Clifton Park, NY area

There are many working farms in the Clifton Park, NY area.  This is the day that you can drive to each of the farms for fall activities such as horseback riding, apple picking, hayrides and more. Here is more information (and keep checking back for more updates).

Family Fun Day at the Moo-seum
Saturday, September 22, 2018 | 10 am – 4:30 pm
Albany Institute of History & Art, 125 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY 12210

This event is themed around animals with art activities, story time, a scavenger hunt, and sing-a-long to popular children’s songs with Andy “the Music Man” Morse. The event is free with museum admission which is $10 for adults, $6 for children ages 6 – 12, and free for children under six. Here is more information on events scheduled throughout the day.

Albany Book Festival
Saturday, September 29, 2018 | 10 am – 4 pm
University at Albany, Campus Center Assembly Hall, 1400 Washington Ave, Albany, NY 12222

The book festival will bring together bookstores, publishers, literary organizations and vendors along with 100 local authors who will be signing and selling copies of their books. There will be areas dedicated to both children and young adult literature. Admission is free. Here is more information.

Troy ChowderFest
Sunday, October 7, 2018 | 12 pm – 4 pm
Monument Square & Downtown Troy, NY 12180

Come hungry (and come early)! Families can vote on the best chowder in the Capital Region for $1/sample. Admission to the event is free, and tickets to sample can be purchased at Troy’s Monument Square. Samples can be found there and at participating Downtown Troy restaurants. Saratoga Springs DBA Fall Festival
Saturday, October 27, 2018 | 11 am – 4 pm
Downtown Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866

For the eighteenth year, downtown Saratoga Springs is transformed for fall-themed fun for children under 12. Local businesses and the Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association put together activities such as circus acts, trick or treating and the Pumpkin Roll. Costumes are encouraged. FAMILY PROGRAM Mummy Birthday Party

In conjunction with Halloween, and the 109th anniversary of the arrival of the mummies at the Albany Institute of art, kids are invited to bring in a small doll of stuffed animal and learn about the mummification process by mummifying their toy. There’s also a dance performance and face painting. The party is free with museum admission which is $10 for adults, $6 for children ages 6 – 12, and free for children under six. Halloween Spooktacular
Sunday, October 28, 2018 | 12 pm – 4 pm
New York State Museum, 222 Madison Avenue, 4th Floor Terrace Albany, NY 12230

Come in costume for a day at the museum. There are events such as crafts, dancing, games, spooky science, and storytelling. At 3 pm, there will be a children’s costume parade. Admission is free. Here is more information.

Free Admission Day: Veterans Day Observed
