A Birth Plan Checklist for Your Upcoming Delivery

When you find out you’re pregnant, you have nine months to prepare for that very day, and you’ll definitely have wishes and goals for before, during and after labor and delivery. Putting together a birth plan checklist can help guide your labor and birth care experience… and maybe get you thinking about some of the questions you may be unsure about. Think of your birth plan as a “best-case scenario” – ideally, you’d like everything to go according to plan, but just remember, labor and delivery can be unpredictable.

Beyond just a wish list, a birth plan is also very helpful for improving patient and provider communication, which is important for a better birth experience. Dialog between moms-to-be, their partner and providers is very important, and a birth plan can serve as a springboard for such dialog; you can get a feel for how your provider feels about your preferences and can manage expectations accordingly.

You can write your own birth plan, or you can use this downloadable, printable birth plan checklist that we put together. It includes your preferences for:

  • Delivery method
  • Birthing atmosphere
  • Fetal monitoring
  • Baby feeding
  • Pain management
  • Support people
  • Childbirth education classes
