Mothers in the Middle: A New Way to Get to Know Your Birth Center

Imagine getting to go through your birthing center experience before you even go into labor. You meet many of your doctors, midwives and lactation consultants. You familiarize yourself with the floor you’ll give birth on and the LDRP rooms that you’ll call home for two days or more. You discuss your birth plan, as well as the alternative options should things not go quite as planned.

Through Burdett Birth Center, this has become a reality thanks to the Mothers in the Middle program.  The Mothers in the Middle program prepares parents-to-be in a unique way with an intimate tour of the facilities, instruction on car seat best practices, a panel discussion and one-on-one access to providers and lactation consultants, and more. Mothers in the Middle includes participation from Burdett obstetricians, midwives, pediatricians, lactation consultants, nurses and more.

“The Mothers in the Middle program truly offers extra opportunities for instruction and guidance on how we at Burdett Birth Center do things and what parents’ options are,” describes Dr. Lawrence Parsley, chairman of Samaritan OB/GYN and participant in the Mothers in the Middle program. “It gives parents a chance to interact with providers they otherwise might not have had the opportunity to meet because they come from different communities than where those doctors’ or midwives’ offices are located.”

Why is this helpful? It gives parents the chance to pick a provider they feel comfortable with or to meet the providers who may be delivering their baby if their chosen provider is not on call, explains Dr. Parsley. By making the introductions in advance, parents feel calmer and at ease no matter who they’re working with once it’s time for labor and delivery.

Instead of a formal class, the Mothers in the Middle program operates as an informal group meeting with a panel of professionals willing and able to answer any questions that parents have – even those that may seem inappropriate for other birth preparation classes. The approach is individualized and held at a convenient time for working parents. It exposes parents-to-be to providers, options and practices they might not have otherwise considered.

The free program is held quarterly at Burdett Birth Center. Mothers are welcome and encouraged to bring their partners, parents, labor coaches or anyone else who will be assisting with the birth. To participate and learn more about what it’s like to give birth at Burdett Birth Center, please join our next class scheduled for April 12 at 5:30 PM in the Pattison Board Room at Samaritan Hospital. The tour of Burdett Birth Center will immediately follow the panel discussion.
